Our Work
78% of children cannot read for meaning by the end of Grade 4.
We are on a mission to change that!
We have noticed that there is a distressing lack of human connection in the learning to read process in low-income schools throughout South Africa. Classrooms are overcrowded, under-resourced and teachers overextended.
Through providing low-income schools with digital infrastructure, our online tutoring application, and a digital library we intend to help these children learn to read for meaning and enjoyment.
Our Solution
A one-on-one learning experience where each child receives individual support with their reading from an online volunteer tutor.
We Provide:
Individual live remote tutoring of learners
Learners will complete reading assessments and reading sessions with an online tutor. During the reading sessions learners will be reading the AWEH! Levelled Reading Series by Oxford University Press.
Learners with access to a digital library​
Our digital library SORA, powered by OverDrive, gives the children access to thousands of books for all ages. We have partnered with Nal’ibali and Book Dash to provide books translated into different African languages.
More school resources
We provide low-income schools with our Book Village program. These learners also have access to their digital library on devices outside of their school. A fee-paying subscription for our program will be available to schools and parents.
Access to Information and Communication Technology in and outside of schools​
We will provide low-income schools with the digital infrastructure needed for our program. This includes tablets, internet connection, headsets and a safe.
Employment to young members of community
We will employ and train a facilitator for every school we implement our program in.
